Dear Lord,

August 15, 2023

Who wants to be around someone that complains a lot? How do you gracefully excuse yourself from their company? I have this friend that complains too much. Not really, it’s me. I’m the complainer. How can I excuse myself from my own company?

This recent season in life has been so challenging for me. When life seems to go from bad to worse, it is hard to shift my focus from all the things that are going wrong to focusing on what is going right. This shift must be intentional, but first it helps to be aware of what’s happening. One thing that has been helpful for me when I’m going through a particularly difficult or frustrating time is to write out my frustrations, questions, and prayers to God. By the end of my writing, my perspective and attitude typically change from complaining to thankfulness. To explain further, I will share one of my writings with you.

Dear Lord,

This season has been so exhausting for me. It appears my efforts are meaningless. I dig in, I get knocked down. What is the point in trying to do the right thing when there seems to be no change? Why does it seem that everyone else around me can do whatever they want with little or no consequences? I’m tired of being the one who is constantly having to adjust my behavior, follow the rules, and “do the right thing” while others get away with breaking the rules and living only thinking of themselves.

I know I will not always understand why you allow these things in my life, but right now, that is not comforting, and it does not make it easier to handle. It is so hard to believe that things will turn out ok. It’s hard to know you see me, my struggling, and you’re not setting things straight now.

But …

I know, looking back, you have never let me down. Because of that, I know what I see as a setback is you setting me up for your best. You are not short-sighted like I am, so you don’t give me what I want in the moment. You know the short cut or early exit I cry for would only rob me from seeing your mighty hand move in a way no man could possibly manipulate. You not only have my soul in mind, but all souls in mind. You want everyone to experience your love, forgiveness, and freedom. I praise you for your unfailing love, mercy, and grace. You are always with me. You always make a way and patiently guide me. You have always provided more than what I need, and it is always at just the right time.

Thank you for loving me and caring for me the way you do! I praise you for who you are. You are my redeemer. You are my firm foundation. You are my provider. You are my everything.

I love you.

It is hard to complain when you realize how wonderful and loving our God is!

Sincerely,

Mea
